A lot of people put off their first chiropractic appointment because they’re not sure what’s going to happen. Will there be cracking? Will they be told they need to come twice a week indefinitely? Will they be treated before they fully understand what’s wrong?
These are reasonable concerns, and they reflect the reality that chiropractic experiences vary considerably between clinics. Here’s exactly what to expect at Bassendean Chiropractic — and what makes this approach different.
What people are usually worried about
The most common concerns first-time patients raise:
The adjustment — many people are nervous about the audible crack associated with spinal manipulation. Some have had a previous experience they didn’t enjoy. Others have been told by a GP or physiotherapist to avoid it.
Pressure to commit — the pre-paid package model exists in some clinics. People are wary of being told they need 30 sessions on the first visit.
Being treated before understanding the problem — some patients have had adjustments performed before anyone explained what was wrong or why the treatment was being applied.
These concerns are valid. They’re also things we actively work to avoid.
The four things that happen at your first appointment
History first. The initial consultation opens with a thorough case history — not a quick intake form, but a conversation. How long has this been happening? What were you doing when it started? What makes it better or worse? How is it affecting your work and daily life? These details directly shape the clinical picture.
Physical assessment. This covers postural analysis, movement screening, and orthopaedic and neurological testing where indicated. The goal is to identify the specific driver of your symptoms — not just the area that hurts.
Clear explanation. Before any treatment is considered, you’ll receive a clear explanation of the findings in plain language. What’s likely contributing, what it means, what the options are. If something is outside the scope of chiropractic care — or better served by another provider — you’ll be told.
A plan, not a programme. After assessment, you’ll receive a realistic recommendation with a defined endpoint. How many visits is typical for this presentation, what milestones to expect, and what you can do between appointments to support recovery.
What makes this clinic different
Longer appointments, by design. The initial consultation is structured to take the time needed — not squeezed into 5 minutes. You can ask questions. You will understand your situation before anything happens.
No treatment is applied before explanation. If we find something that warrants hands-on care, we explain what we’re doing and why before we do it.
Low-force options are available. For patients who are nervous about manipulation, prefer a gentler approach, or have a presentation that suits it — SOT (Sacro-Occipital Technique) and Flexion Distraction are available as alternatives to traditional spinal manipulation. No cracking required.
You’re not obligated to commit. After your assessment, you’ll have the information you need to make an informed decision. There’s no pressure to book further appointments on the day.
Before you come in
Nothing specific is required. If you have recent imaging relevant to your condition — X-ray, MRI, CT scan — bring it along. Comfortable clothing is useful if movement assessment is likely, but isn’t essential.
